Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Saturday.
Araghchi briefed Wang on the latest developments in the regional situation. He stated that Israel had recently launched a blatant attack on Iran, resulting in casualties among both military personnel and civilians. Araghchi said that the attack on Iranian nuclear facilities would be a serious violation of international law. Such military action by Israel would be highly dangerous and could drag the entire region into a full-scale war, he noted.
He expressed hope that the international community would speak with one voice in demanding that Israel stop its military operations. He also thanked China for its consistent understanding and support of Iran's position and expressed confidence that China would play an increasingly important role in promoting regional peace and stability.
Wang stated that after Israel's attack on Iran, China immediately made its position clear. China explicitly condemned Israel for violating Iran's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. Wang said China firmly opposes the brutal attacks targeting Iranian officials that have caused civilian casualties, and support Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty, defending its legitimate rights and interests, and protecting the safety of its people.
Wang noted that Israel's actions severely violate the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and the basic norms of international relations, especially the attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, which sets a dangerous precedent and could lead to catastrophic consequences.
Wang said China supports the international community in upholding justice and speaking out promptly. He also urged countries with influence over Israel to make concrete efforts to restore peace.
Wang said that the region is at a critical and sensitive juncture. China is willing to maintain communication with Iran and other relevant parties and continue to play a constructive role in easing tensions. He expressed hope that Iran would ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel. Araghchi responded that Iran is willing to maintain communication with China and will make every effort to ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel.
