The Syrian interim authorities should earnestly fulfill their counter-terrorism obligations and take all necessary measures to combat all terrorist organizations listed by the Security Council, including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, said Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, at the Security Council meeting on the Syria issue, according to a release published on the website of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations on Tuesday local time.
Syria is currently at a critical stage in achieving political stability and economic recovery. Recently, various parties in Syria have made positive efforts to promote internal reconciliation, but the current situation in the country remains complex and fragile, Fu said. We hope that the Syrian interim authorities will take effective measures to fulfill their commitments, genuinely respond to and address the concerns of the international community, and, with the help of the international community, restore peace and stability, allowing the Syrian people to live a stable and dignified life soon, said Fu.
Holding a national dialogue conference is a key step toward promoting a broadly inclusive political transition, Fu said. The Syrian interim authorities should actively respond to the voices from various sectors within the country, continue to advance extensive dialogue and consultation, strengthen internal unity, and achieve genuine inclusiveness, Fu said.
Recently, there have been multiple violent terrorist incidents within Syria, raising concerns about the risk of terrorist organizations and extremist forces taking advantage of the chaos to gain strength and regroup and expand. According to media reports, foreign terrorist fighters based in Syria have recently been incorporated into the Syrian government forces. The Chinese side expresses serious concern about this, Fu said.
Fu also called for stronger efforts to alleviate the humanitarian situation in the region.
China is deeply concerned about Israel’s attacks on Iran, which have led to a sudden escalation of military conflict, and condemns Israel’s violation of Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, said Fu.
If the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to escalate or even expand, countries in the Middle East, such as Syria, will also suffer greatly. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has spoken with the foreign ministers of both Iran and Israel, calling for both sides to resolve their differences through dialogue. China is willing to maintain communication with all relevant parties and play a constructive role in de-escalating the situation, Fu noted.
